Fostering Community

CAREHUB is an online resource hub for foster carers, aspiring carers and the wider fostering community. It is designed to bring learning, interaction and helpful insights to you.
Did you know that you are a brain builder? The science tells us that early childhood is a unique time in our lives that lays the foundation for wellbeing, behaviour and learning across the life trajectory. Everything we do, say and provide for children, shapes their early brain development – and these early experiences influence their ability to not only survive but thrive in life.
As foster carers or people who work with fostered children, we know that many children suffer from abuse, neglect and household dysfunction. These are commonly known as Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). We need to understand how ACEs derail healthy brain development and behaviour. We also need to be trauma-informed in our approach to supporting children, so that we can help them to process and overcome the impact of traumatic events on their holistic wellbeing.

Most people want to promote the best outcomes possible for children who live in foster care.

But here’s the thing
Fostering involves caring for some of the most vulnerable children in our society. Many will have experienced unbelievably difficult times during their early years. Their need to feel safe, valued, cared for and listened to, will therefore be greater than a child who has not been subjected to ACEs.
Every day, thousands of foster carers work alongside professionals to promote positive outcomes for their foster children. However, the statistics tell us that outcomes for fostered children are often worse than we might hope for.
If you are a foster carer, you know that the role can be tough. Sometimes it is enough to leave you feeling overwhelmed. There might be times when you would welcome a little extra guidance or support.
You might be able to relate to this
If you are a prospective foster carer, the thought of committing to the role might seem daunting. You may think that some aspect of your past might exclude you from becoming a foster carer. You might doubt whether you will be able to overcome the challenges of caring for a child whose needs may be complex.
Most fostering agencies provide good training and support, but that is not always enough. Research shows that in a lot of cases, foster carers provide some of the best support to other foster carers. After all, they have often faced similar challenges – and learnt how to overcome them.
So here’s a question:

How can you make use of the support you receive from your fostering agency?
